Time Warner Cable Arena was closely guarded with security and bomb-sniffing dogs Friday. Secret Service members were all throughout the building.
No, Michael Jordan was not walking in the building – it was someone more important.
The first lady, Michelle Obama, graced the CIAA Tournament with her joy, smile and warm spirit.
The place was jumping. The stands were packed as she participated in the Let’s Move! campaign that helps children with obesity.
Everyone was excited to have the first lady on the court, chanting “Obama” in the crowd as the kids gave her hugs. She ended her stay by taking pictures with the Johnson C. Smith and Chowan ladies basketball teams as they and waited to warm up for their game.
‘Is anyone staying for the game?’ I asked as everyone left the building when she finished.
The stands were empty as the hometown Johnson C. Smith team started playing.
Maybe most of the fans headed to the day parties downtown. Is that why I see a bunch of folks with red cups in their hands?
Back to the basketball tournament, as the Shaw women have a chance to defend their CIAA championship by making it to the finals Saturday. Shaw defeated Bowie state, 59-44, to secure a spot. The men, who are also looking to defend their title, tip off against Winston-Salem State at 9 p.m.
