Hillside wins 4-A title to cap unbeaten season

Winston-Salem, N.C. — Vad Lee threw for three touchdowns as Durham Hillside shut out Davie County 40-0 on Saturday to win the Class 4-A North Carolina High School Athletic Association championship.
Lee, named the game's most valuable player, finished with 264 yards passing on 14 of 25 completions as the Hornets (16-0) capped an undefeated season with their first state title. He also ran for 25 yards.
"He's the leader of this team," Hillside coach Antonio King said of Lee. "Without him, this would not have been possible. When he's clicking, all the other guys feed off him."
Lee, who has committed to Georgia Tech, threw scoring passes of 40 yards to Aquez Willis and 57 yards to Shawn Malloy in the first quarter, then added an 11-yarder to Jarrell Jones in the second period.
Willis finished with four catches for 118 yards and Malloy had three receptions for 83 yards.
Jamaal Williams added 83 yards rushing and two TDs — in second-quarter runs of 32 and 11 yards. Defensive lineman Ronald Thompson returned a deflected Davie pass 30 yards for a touchdown as the Hornets scored all of their points in the first half.
"It's always great to have a good start ... but nothing surprises me about these guys," Lee said.
Jacob Barber finished with 134 yards rushing for the War Eagles (13-3). But most of that came in the second half, as Hillside held Davie to 48 total yards in the first two quarters.
The Hornets' defense also forced three turnovers, and sacked War Eagles quarterback Carson Herndon five times.
"We knew they were good ... but our kids really got shocked," Davie coach Doug Illing said. "We wanted to slow everything down, and mix up the run and pass. But we got behind so quick, that took us out of our game plan."
