RALEIGH, N.C. — When the North Carolina State Fair unveiled its list of new food this year, one of the most talked about items was the rattlesnake corn dog.
Maybe it was because of all the snakes in the news this year or maybe it was just our odd fasciation with exotic meat. (I did eat a tarantula a few years ago)

Either way, this item was a must-try for our team.

We were among the first to visit the Pioneer Wagon stand just down from the NC State Fair Flyer. The corn dog is $10.

The snakes are wild caught in west Texas and then that meat is ground up and made into a Bratwurst-style sausage using Jalapeno peppers and chardonnay wine (it helps reduce the gaminess). It is then battered and hand-dipped into the fryer to create a corn dog. It is served with Venom sauce, which is an avocado salsa.

It has a more beefy flavor than I thought it would. Get it with the venom sauce because that really helps balance out the flavors!

My son tried it too, but he couldn't get over the fact it was a snake. He would rather eat a regular corn dog.

If you are adventurous, try it! It really was pretty good.
