Deep-fried gets new twists at NC State Fair

Cookie dough, brisket and some Mexican street corn are among our top picks for new food to try at the North Carolina State Fair this year.

On Monday, the media got a chance to taste some of the new foods headed to the fairgrounds. In all, there are 40 new items planned.

While pickle pizza and rattlesnake corn dogs are making headlines for being new at the North Carolina State Fair this year, they were not available on Monday. Vendors often come from out of state, which makes it hard for them to arrive early enough to make the media preview. Tropical Delights will be serving a Dole Pineapple Split at the fair. They were also not able to make it to the media event, but we do hope to try their dish at the fair as soon as possible!

Of the dishes we tried Monday, these were our favorites (In no particular order):

Douglas Farms: DoriEsquites - This was an excellent fair food pick because it combines Mexican street corn inside a bag of crushed Doritos. You can add jalapenos on top for some heat. It is easy to carry around. The flavors go really well together too.

Fluffys Handcut Donuts: Banana Cream Pie Donut - Hand-cut, yeast-raised donut, filled with banana cream pudding, dipped in vanilla icing and topped with crushed Nilla wafers and a banana. It's a perfect sweet fair treat!

Cool Runnings: Jerk BBQ Pulled Pork Bowl - This bowl is filled with Jerk barbecue pulled pork on top of homemade macaroni and cheese. For years Cool Runnings has done an amazing job at bringing great flavor combos to the fair, and this is another winner!

Golden K Dog: Korean Corn Dogs - If you haven't enjoyed one of their Korean corn dogs before, you are missing out. They are made with beef or chicken sausage, or mozzarella cheese (or both), battered up and deep fried. Get them rolled in hot Cheetos for extra crunch and heat.

Hot Chix Hotcakes & Chicken: Pumpkin Spice Mini Pancakes - These fluffy mini pancakes are covered in a pumpkin sauce, icing and pumpkin spice seasoning. This is a sweet snack that kids and adults will like.

Kora's Cookie Dough (Emma's Cookie Kitchen): Oreo Crumble Cookie Dough on a Stick - Chocolate chip cookie dough dipped in chocolate and then rolled in Oreo crumbles. This is so good. Perfect for your chocolate craving!

La Farm Bakery: Buffalo Chicken Pinwheels - Warm Buffalo chicken dip and cheddar cheese spread over a whole wheat croissant and rolled into a pinwheel. It's La Farm, so you know the croissant is going to be amazing anyway. Top it with chicken and cheese and this is a must-try! The flavors are rich but not overpowering, and it has just a hint of that Buffalo sauce heat.

Waypoint Oyster Bar: Fried NC Flounder Tacos - These two flounder tacos are topped with house-made corn and black bean salsa and avocado cilantro cream sauce.

Moose Joose Slushie: Fall In A Cup Green Apple Loaded Slushie - This green apple slush has a caramel drizzle, apple slices, whipped cream and caramel bits. It is really like fall in a cup! The green apple slush isn't too tart, and the caramel gives it that sweet kick.
