Amanda Lamb: Holidays canceled

I've heard people say they are doing more decorating this year, making things more festive for their families. While I applaud the sentiment, I just don't have it in me.

Halloween is the first of the big seasonal holidays to rear it’s head during the pandemic. Unfortunately, everything about Halloween is the opposite of social distancing. The guidance this year was not to trick-or-treat, only to gather in small groups, and if you must give out candy don’t do it in a common bowl. Lay out each piece individually.

Frankly, it was too exhausting for me to think about. I opted for turning off the porch lights and making candy bags just for the kids on my street.

But like I said—this is just the beginning. We still have Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Eve to contend with. With all of the health guidelines, nothing seems feasible. And while this is disappointing to adults, it’s especially difficult for children.

I’ve heard people say they are doing more decorating this year, making things more festive for their families. While I applaud the sentiment, I just don’t have it in me. I think I’ll just get through them, do the best I can to make each holiday special for our family of four with the hopes that 2021 will allow us to return to some of our bigger traditions.

Sorry, not trying to be an Ebenezer Scrooge or anything. Maybe the calmness and the peace of the holidays this year will surprise me. Maybe it will surprise all of us. I sure hope so.
