Every Monday, I like to highlight local moms, who are making a difference in the community. Maybe they're building something. Maybe they're creating something. But, whatever they are doing, they are taking risks and finding success as they follow their passions.

And every November, I announce Go Ask Mom's Made by Mom Gift Guide, which features a dozen of these local moms. As you plan your holiday shopping, I encourage you to consider these local mom-run businesses and support their amazing work. Over the next several weeks, you'll hear more about each of these moms and the work they are doing!

The latest book from Harris, Raleigh-based science educator and mom and frequent sharer of easy experiments on Go Ask Mom, features all kinds of science experiments that require things you have around the house and minimal help from grown ups.
Launched by perennial local mompreneur Cary Heise, the faith-based nonprofit helps low-income women who are trying to make a better life for themselves. These community artisans create beautiful jewelry and home decor items. In turn, they receive work and job training through the program.
For the foodies on your list, Cary mom Judit Beres' company offers up a variety of specialty cooking oils.
The brainchild of Susan Caldwell, founder and owner of Flour Power Kids Cooking Studio, this new culinary subscription box for kids and families features recipes, games and other activities for kids ages 5 and up.

This Raleigh-based Etsy store from Amy Koch creates an escape room experience that you can do from home!

In Chapel Hill, Shannon Tennyson has created a line of reversible and convertible clothing for girls.

Created by Angella Fraser, the line features a collection of wigs and wig services for professional black women ages 40 and up, along with a line of custom hats.

Marilauren Hoying has created a line of adorable and beautiful teething jewelry so moms can dress up without fear that their little ones will damage their jewelry. You can find them online and at Everafter Kids in Cary.
Washington's cookbook intermingles her Caribbean heritage and her current life in the United States and shares 80 recipes that are approachable and fun.

Drawing from her memories of the folklore she heard growing up in Denmark, Kirstie Marx has created a book and related items that focus on helping and serving others during the holidays - and all year.

April Nelson offers a range of organic bow ties and hair bows, which you can find online and at Everafter Kids in Cary.
Amy Beshgetoorian creates beautiful watercolors and note cards. She's also participating in Activate Good's annual Shop for Good, which supports local nonprofits.
