Adam Gold reflects on Carolina Hurricanes season, looks ahead to best moves for the offseason
99.9 The Fan's Adam Gold reflects on the Carolina Hurricanes journey to the Eastern Conference Final, how the season came to an end, and what the Canes need to get through the East and make it back to the Stanley Cup Final.
Um, so I guess really one of the first things that comes to mind after the series ends the way it does is how do you process this if you're a member of the Hurricanes, if you're a fan, because sweeps happen, but to have a sweep like this where a team, you know, the, for the first time, the entire series led by more than a goal was in, in game four and that lead was cut so fast. How do you even process that? Um, first of all, I've seen it before the other way, the Hurricane swept the Islanders in the second round in the 2019 playoffs and that was a very close series. I mean, Carolina could have lost, they won game one in overtime one, nothing in that series. So they could have easily lost any of the games that they played. Ultimately, they were the better team they played better. Um, this was a very close series and certainly you can point to any number of moments in game one or game two or game three or game four and say, yeah, Carolina could have won. Um, but I think the team that played better won. And I know Florida played, uh, Carolina played well. There's no, there's no denying that. And I, I, I hope I'm not angering anybody by saying that. I think in sports, there are, there are moments in every game and Carolina didn't win any of those moments. Florida Panthers won those moments, whether it was not being able to beat Sergei Bobrovsky. Um Seth Jarvis off the crossbar in game one in overtime on the power play. I mean, I'm not, not being critical of Seth Jarvis, but that's a moment right there. You grabbed game one a game where Florida was the better team until the third period and Carolina got one goal, couldn't get the next one. Martin is the breakaway. That's a moment. You have to grab that moment. Sergei Bobrovsky won that moment and the post, the, the crossbar beat Seth Jarvis, but there were enough moments in the series that Carolina just could not get over and Florida did when they had their opportunities the right before the fourth overtime turnover in Carolina's end and Ben it to Chuck, boom, it's over. That's to me, Florida won the moments. They were the better team, but it's fair to think that Carolina could have won any of these four games very easily. And if they win game one, I don't know, maybe the rest of the series is different, but there was a sense of inevitability even after Carolina tied the game last night that Florida is still gonna figure out a way, I thought, no, I, I would agree. Um So at the end of the, you know, the, the season ended yesterday, we haven't even had the exit interviews for the players yet. But what does Carolina need to do in the off season? So that next time they are in this position, they can capitalize on those moments. Well, I'm not sure we know the answer to that, but because we all thought that they addressed their major problem last offseason in signing Matt, uh trading for Max Patti. So maybe they bring Paci ready back. I know my conversations with the, with the owner Tom Dundon earlier in the year after the second injury. I said, are you gonna bring pare back? And he goes, yes. So I know they want to, we'll see if Max was the answer. Um I, I thought even bef before Max reinjured himself before he came back and Carolina was fully operational in terms of their forward group, I felt like they might have been one forward short even with Paci already coming back. So I don't know, maybe they need a little bit more. Um I think ultimately, this team needs another top six center. That's what I think. And you know, I don't who that guy is. Um Hey, look, I'd love to get Elias Lindholm back from Calgary. I'm not sure if Calgary is gonna be all all that interested in parting with him. Uh, but he only has one year left on his contract and who knows if he's, if he doesn't want to resign there, that's why they moved on from Matthew Chuck Kuck says he wasn't signing a long term contract with Calgary. So they had to get rid of Matthew Chuck. Now they got a lot for him. Um, what would Carolina be willing to part with to get Lindholm? I have no idea. And I don't know if, uh, Calgary is in the same position with him, but that's a player. If I were. Don Wade, I would be targeting in a minute. Um, but they, I think they need another center who can play definitely in your top six and I think they need some, some usable size, not a goon, not somebody who just runs around hitting people, somebody who can play and is also big. Uh, we can diminish it, we can downplay it all we want. I think every team that is in the playoffs and expects to go far and Florida is big, flat out. They have a big team, Dallas Vegas, they're all big hurricanes are not big, they're just not, they're not necessarily tiny. They don't have, uh, you know, you know, uh, little people running around, uh, the ice, but they are not in a physically imposing team different, maybe with S Seiko in the lineup, but even he's, he's not like 64. So, uh, Carolina needs to get a little bit bigger, I think. Um, you know, you, you definitely saw the, the effect of that size in this series for sure. Um, when you look at it's because it's Carolina, I feel like is in such an interesting place because, you know, for so long it was no playoffs and now playoffs have expectation. It's about how far do you go in the playoffs. So when you look back at, we'll start with the postseason and then the season as a whole, when you kind of do like a postmortem on this postseason, what, what stands out to you progress made, I assume since they get to the Eastern conference finals, I mean, I think it's all relative. I think they expect it to be here. I I I do and they should expect to be here. It's not, they're not a fluke. The Hurricanes are one of the best teams in the league again, third straight year. They're one of the best teams in the entire sport. So that is a credit to the coach. It's a credit to the players. They play a great brand of hockey. It's a, it's a brand that is conducive to creating scoring chances and all of that and they don't give up anything. I mean, may, people may not know this, uh, in terms of, well, you use, use the term that Rod uses grade a scoring chances. They created the most and allowed the fewest in the NHL this year. That's pretty good. You now, their problem with all the stuff they created was that they didn't convert a high enough percentage. They were, I think one from the bottom in terms of turning those chances into goals in terms of a percentage. But because they created so many, they were about middle of the pack in goals scored from those opportunities, but they were best in the NHL at fewest and lowest percentage allowed. Carolina allowed only about 2.5 goals a game this year. They were awesome penalty kill was great penalty kill kind of waned at the end because at times the other power plays as you get deeper into the playoffs and you play more dangerous power plays, they're gonna be better. Florida scored on four of their last nine power play chances. Matthew Chuck won game one, they won game two and they won game four based on the power play. Um, well, no, what game one wasn't a power play, but game two is a power play. Game four. He scored two power play goals in game four. So that's, that became a problem at the end. Uh, and Carolina's penalty, power play wasn't very good in the postseason. It was two for 14 in this series. That's not good enough. Uh, so that needs, still needs to get better, but we should not lose sight of how great this season was and did the injury cause the loss. I mean, it would be easy to use that, that as an excuse because you didn't have Veni and you didn't have a player like you thought you were gonna have and pare, but a lot of teams had injuries and you, I don't think you can use it as an excuse. But it, uh, because, and we don't know if, even if you had Vetch Ako and Patch, you ready, you don't know how it would have played out. I would have liked to have seen it. I hope we get to see it next year. Would have been, would have been really fun, uh, for sure. Um, sorry, it's allergies, man. Um, I, uh, really, then I guess my, my, really, my only, my last question now at this point is, um, when you talking about game four in particular, um, I mean, it just, it feels so heartbreaking and I think that's just kind of how the sport is sometimes. Um, you know, what, what's the first thing that crosses your mind when you sit there watching game four? And it, it ends the way it does and that series ends the way it does. First of all, it's not the fall, it's the sudden stop that gets you. And I didn't love the pen, the penalty call on stall at the end of the game. Uh, I grew up watching enough hockey to where I've always heard they swallow the whistles in the third period. Well, they didn't swallow it this time. Um, I mean, in the rule book, it's a trip. I, I mean, I'm not gonna complain about something that was callable, but there was a cross check in the exact same spot on the ice about a minute earlier where Anthony declare hit Brett Pesci after he had gotten rid of the puck that they let go. But again, I mean, it was a trip so you gotta kill the penalty and they didn't. And that's unfortunate. Um I think ultimately last night came down to Florida's best players were excellent. I mean, dynamite. Chuck was great. Wasn't a, wasn't a noticeable Alexander Barkov game except on the first goal, but it was absolutely a Matthew Chuck game and a Sam Bennett game. And Sam Bennett for me was the central figure in the two biggest moments in the game, the Jacob Slavi hit, which I hated it, but it was clean and the goal in which he got his stick in between the pads of Frederick Anderson. And there's no video evidence saying that there was interference. There really isn't. You can't see that Bennett did anything to Anderson to impede him. We can, we can guess all day long. And I'm not telling people that they're wrong for thinking that there was interference, but there's no video proof of it. And I do think that his presence impacted Freddie and I think that's the kind of player that Sam Bennett is, and part of the reason Florida is where they are is because Sam Bennett is a very good player who plays an order, nasty sometimes dirty game. It's an element. Carolina would like to find, I think, um, again, just got to keep it in check. Sometimes Bennet crosses the line. You don't like that because it, it, it hurts your team when your teammate crosses the line. Dallas is gonna get hurt without Jamie Benn. That was a dirty play that the check on Mar Stone. Um, but Hurricanes need that. You know, the word, the, the funny thing is about this is that if you had told me before the series started before the playoffs started, that Carolina would get the goaltending that they got in the postseason. I wouldn't, I would have been surprised, had they not reached the Stanley Cup finals? I thought goaltending would be their undoing. Goaltending was outstanding. Anti Ranta first Frederick Anderson next. Uh, but ultimately, what got them was they couldn't find a goal and that is kind of the same story we had last year, the year before the year before that, although I don't think it's as simple as they need more goal scoring, obviously they do. Um, and they were missing two pieces that might have been answers, but ultimately, it came down to, they couldn't find that goal and it was about those moments. Um, a anything about all of this that I failed to mention that you wanna add. Um, yeah, just like big picture about the franchise. I think they're in a great spot. There's so much to be hopeful for. They'll be good for years to come. As long as they're long as they keep a lot of the players around. I think this is the next two summers are enormous and I think they have to address things in this summer to make it easier on them. Next summer. I have three things that I think they absolutely have to do in this offseason or they should do. One is figure out an extension for Sebastian. A don't wait till next year, do it now. Two do the same thing with Jalen Chatfield who has one more year left on his contract because I think he can be part of the mix going forward and probably won't be an expensive player. But I would figure that out this year. Uh, and the other is see if you can do something with Seth Jarvis on a maybe not a long term deal, but I would get at least the next contract out of the way. Even if it's a smaller one to get you to the next contract. I would, I would deal with those things right away. Uh, because next summer terrain, Brett Pesci, Brady Shay, I mean, all of the, the bills are coming due the following year and you need to know you can't do them all in the same year, you gotta break it up. Even though ao's got more time, Jarvis has more time. Chatfield has more time. They have to figure that out. They have to get part of the, part of their work done, part of the business done this summer. So you don't have to do all of it next.
