Midfielder Jacori Hayes discusses his acclimation to North Carolina FC. Hayes has six seasons of experience in the MLS.
It's been a very welcoming environment. Everyone here is super friendly um in terms of the team, awesome group of guys and very competitive on the field. So I think uh the sky's the limit for this team. And I feel like if we just focus every day, we can accomplish the goals that we have set out. Um But overall, I'm just very excited and very happy to be here. What are some of the draws of coming to a club that's just kind of elevated to the next level? That's the, that's the worry you like expansion teams, the teams are coming up to the to a higher league. You're like, all right, is it just kind of a learning curve? Is it kind of how's this first season going to be? But talking to the coaching staff, seeing the players that they have signed, um really convinced me that, you know, this, this club is serious and um looking to build off the championship from last year and just win another trophy this year. Um So it was very encouraging and, and what made me want to be a part of the project where there is when you look at the makeup of the team. I have essentially, it's almost half players who were with them during the US L league one run and then now group of veterans and new cover just in general. How, what is, uh something like that do in terms of just integrating this team? How, how difficult has it been? How easy has it been for everyone that guys are coming together? I feel like every year when you're going into a season, there's always new players that you have to on board this year. I'm one of the new players that have to be on boarded. Um So it does take a little bit of preseason, like getting to know guys, what are their tendencies? Like, how do we fit together as a team, as you said, get the chemistry just right. But I think the crucial part, we have good young players, we have good veteran pieces that know the league know kind of what to expect week in and week out when we face opponents. Um And so we'll just kind of lean on each other throughout the year and hopefully we peak at the right time going into the playoffs. That's always the goal and to win a trophy. Um So there might be learning curves along the way. It won't be perfect every weekend. We'll have our ups and downs. But overall, I think we're, the team is set up to, to peak at the right moment you mentioned on, right? What, what are, what's the, what is, what is the culture of NCFC that, you know, even in your fourth time that you Yeah, unfortunately, I missed the escape room with the guys. Um So it's nice to see that we have some uh off the field bonding moments. Um You know, we have like the team culture in terms of like the rules going into practice turning in this, you know, kind of accountability. Uh I think that's a big a word for us and um it carries over onto the field, the little things that you do off the field. Um So, uh everything I've seen so far, the, the culture is right and uh give me a couple more days and I'll, I'll, I'll be at the next uh off field function, you know, on the field, uh seem like, you know, practice today was a little, you know, spirited and high energy and everything and talk about that. It's uh it's very competitive out there. Um You know, you see guys chirping at each other, it get, it peaks up to the right moment and it's just like it feels like a game and that's all you want is Monday through Friday, you want it to be harder than the game that's on Saturday. I think that's when teams are flowing at their best. Um You know, when the game is easier than your training sessions, it, it shows you're knocking it, the guys are smiling, they're happy. You're getting three points on the weekend and that's everyone's goal. Um, so I, I love kind of how we're fighting each day at practice and it's only gonna make us better and sharper for the weekend. Any thoughts on John Bradford as the coach, what you've got to know of him so far or what, what kind of, um, direction he's given you or anything like that, uh, overall, just a great guy. Um, good coach, I, I, you know, I'll get to know him more throughout this year. Um, but, you know, he always speaks to just the, the accountability from each player in terms of trying to have everyone i in for reinforcing our principles, kind of the tactics that we want and kind of as well like reward other players when you see a player do a good action, compliment them, build them up when you see they're not doing something, try to coach them and lend a helping hand to help them out. But as well as encouraging and fostering that competitiveness that you see on the, in the training sessions the first two days so far. Um, so it's all all positive signs and um, a really good coach, maybe becoming a leader. You have had experience at higher levels. Yeah, I hope to, you know, help guys and hopefully and help myself as well. I hope they help me. Um, you know, I'm still a student of the game. I'm still learning, I'm still growing as a person and as a player. Um, but anything that I've picked up along the way, I'll gladly share and, um, just kind of help out everyone as, as much as I can. Of course, I, I would like to be a leader but it's not, it's a natural thing. It's like it, it's, or it has to organically happen. Uh, everyone has to accept you, you have to kind of just be yourself. And so I'll just be myself and we'll see what it turns into if it's a leadership role, if it's kind of a supporting cast, whatever it is, like, I'm just gonna be myself and kind of let the cards fall out as they may.
