Brind'Amour: It's about bouncing back, it's about getting better, it's about how do you win the next one
The Carolina Hurricanes had two days in between games and now have another chance to close out the series vs. the Islanders Tuesday in Game 5. Head coach Rod Brind'Amour spoke to the media ahead of Tuesday's game
Uh, tried to wait you out completely, wait us out. I do have a job, you know, come on everything. Ok. What that was dealing with practice stuff, practice wasn't over for me just because I got off the ice doesn't mean it's over. Um, yeah, nothing that I know of. Yeah, some of the changes you KKK to get someone who maybe a little more on that in terms of what he does. Yeah, maybe I, I wouldn't read it too much into the lines today. So, um, we were just, you know, looking at some other things but I, I don't know if that's how it's, I'm gonna go tomorrow but it, but yeah, you, you know, sometimes certain players, you, you, you have to have that same way you're thinking. Uh, Kui is kind of one of those guys where, um, he definitely thinks outside the box, uh, with the way he plays the game and we know it's obviously been very effective. You obviously want to try to win every game. But is there an advantage to getting to play another game and being a little closer to when the next round would start? No, definitely not, um, you know, that's, uh, not, was not in the cards that we were trying to do. But, um, you know, we have another opportunity tomorrow night and, uh, you know, it's great that we have it. So hopefully we take advantage of it. Um, yeah, I don't know, we brought him in to, you know, help on the power play and, and, you know, I think there's still time for him to kinda take on a little bit more of a, like you're saying, m minutes. Um, but, you know, I, I, I've liked what he's done. I just, like I said, the right fit. Maybe not quite there yet. We'll, we'll keep tinkering with it. Yeah. Yes and no. I mean, it's, it's certainly you live and die every day and then you have to kind of regroup and then get perspective and, um, understand, I mean, we know we, we, we have a pretty good feeling in the room and we know how hard it is and so you can't expect to go and win every night like you expect to. But it's likelihood is it's, doesn't happen. I don't know any team that's won every game. Maybe there has been, but it just, this time of year, everybody's good. And so it's about bouncing back. It's about getting better. It's about how do you win the next one. Lebron had a story today about, uh, series supervisors for officiating and looks like, sounds like you guys are one of the few teams that maybe the GM just handles all that. So, do you talk to Don ahead of those or is Don just, uh, handling that? He hand it, we've done that in the past and it really had no benefit to. So just something I don't have to deal with in the past. We, we, we've done it where you talked to the supervisor and, you know, I, I don't really know what, what it does. So, you know, that's, that's not something of our concern really was Saturday. A reminder of just how thin the margin would be in this series. It's every game you watch, every game in the playoffs, it comes down to one player there, you get it or you don't, you know, we, we could be easily talking about, you know, KK shot the one off the goalie knob that goes in that we're not even having this conversation when they, they can pull up three or four in all their games. And it could be a totally different series as far as where the wins were. So it always comes down to one play here or there. It's just a matter of you pushing to find those more opportunities to get those plays with Freddy playing as much as he has played. Do you worry about the order if you, if you decide to go from? No, he's both guys have shown a rural resilience and not playing forever and then jumping right in and doing well. So that's really not a concern. Well, really well, I mean, he's done everything we asked him to do. And, um, you know, I think he's been real solid. It's not something you had to do for during your career. But to see guys is it really hard to jump in when you haven't played that much, especially when the intensity levels ramped up. That's very hard. And it's impressive that, you know, he was able to, you know, adjust as well as the, how much, how much does specs maturity level kind of increase? It seems, you know, a lot of the times are trying to go into those and yeah, you see it, I mean, that's this time of year, you know, this one is huge and we need it to continue. I think he's done a great job, been really good player. He hasn't been rewarded for how well he's played. I think he's been around it. Um, and certainly, uh, you know, we need him to continue to do that. I talked to Justin Williams earlier today about the similarities between this team and the Stanley Cup team, obviously. And he said that the thing that comes to his mind is that there's expectations from players and coaches to be where you guys are and there's expectations from fans now that you guys have gotten to this point where you're constantly making it. Is that something you have to kind of battle and the players have to think about is dealing with outside pressure. Well, I think it's there no matter where you are. But II, I mean, we don't, that's really, you gotta be a big boy. I mean, you got to understand that that's gonna happen, but you have to leave that at the door and, you know, you got a job to do when you show up regardless of expectations outside. That's really irrelevant. It's only four games. But how much do you miss? What's wrong with the Hurricanes power play? Questions during the fight? Are they, are they out there still? Oh, ok. Should have been because we didn't score on one game. I don't think so. That's listen, that's part of being fans and that's stuff you, you guys deal with. I really, you know, try not to get caught up in that stuff because I, I already don't sleep. So that would just really put me over the edge. Well, I know that's probably out there. So, have you been happy with the penalty kill? I know that there haven't been a ton of opportunities but kind of unfortunate really. Like the other night we did a real nice job. It's a, you know, a shot from outside that the remount easy save and it just happens to go to their guy. We're inside, we're in good positioning. It's just, you know, that's what happens when you take penalties. Like you you, you're under stress or something, you're gonna have balances that don't go your way then that's, uh, you know what happened there and when you lose face off? Yeah. Well, that was a big deal too. Yeah, you have to take advantage and win all the games you can, but is there an advantage disadvantage for teams that like the Rangers who have already advanced the next round versus still having to play? You keep talking about the next round? I, that's just so far away from my mind. So, um, that's the question for them, you know, good on them. They, they, they can have that question. We are not at that point yet.
