On Monday, the Denver Broncos announced they will release 12-year veteran and former NC State Wolfpack and Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson at the start of the new league year.
The Broncos announced Wilson’s release on X, formerly Twitter, with a statement from General Manager George Paton and Head Coach Sean Payton.
In the post, Paton and Payton thanked Wilson for his contributions to the team.
“As we move forward, we are focused on building the strongest team possible for the 2024 season and beyond,” the statement read. “We are excited to improve this offseason and will have the flexibility to get better through the draft and free agency.”
Wilson thanked the Broncos for welcoming him and his family with "open arms"
"Tough times don't last, but tough people do," WIlson said on X. "I am excited for what's next."
The Broncos acquired Wilson during the 2022 offseason in a trade with the Seahawks, who won a Super Bowl in 2014 with Wilson under center.
Wilson then signed a five-year, $245 million contract with Denver. Seattle received quarterback Drew Lock, tight end Noah Fant, defensive end Shelby Harris, two first-round picks, two second-round picks and a fifth-round pick in the trade.
Wilson won 11 games in 30 starts with the Broncos and passed for 6,594 yards, 42 touchdowns and 19 interceptions.
The Broncos will absorb a cap hit of $85 million for the remainder of his contract. It is the largest dead-money cap hit in league history.
