Classic baseball movie “Bull Durham” was released in theaters 35 years on Thursday.
The romantic comedy sports movie that hit theaters on June 15, 1988, featured Kevin Costner, Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon. It was filmed at Durham Athletic Park, the former home of the Durham Bulls.
The movie is partly based on the minor-league baseball experiences of writer and director Ron Shelton. It depicts the players and fans of the Durham Bulls. The film stars Costner as “Crash” Davis, a veteran catcher from the AAA Richmond Braves brought in to teach rookie pitcher Ebby Calvin “Nuke” LaLoosh, who is portrayed by Robbins.
Love interest Annie Savoy (Sarandon) romances Nuke but finds herself increasingly attracted to Davis.
If you are in need of a last-minute Father’s Day gift (reminder: It is Sunday!), recall one of the most famous scenes in the movie where pitching coach Larry Hockett – portrayed by actor Robert Wuhl – offers some advice during a mound visit.
“Candlesticks always make a nice gift,” Hockett said in the movie.
“Bull Durham” made about $50.98 million in the box office in 1988.
