With the regular season schedule underway for the Carolina Hurricanes, 'Canes fans may have noticed a unique twist to the team logo.
The hockey team revealed a 'Black Excellence' jersey as a creative salute for Black History Month.
Mike Jones, a Charlotte-based artist and Apex native, is the mastermind behind the design.
"The fact I'm part of NHL history, Canes history, history of the city of Raleigh, Apex is where I come from, it's all surreal to me," the Apex native shared with WRAL.
It took up to three months to design the rose, keeping the representation of the team with red and black colors.
Jones said he drew his inspiration from the poem 'The Rose That Grew from Concrete' by Tupac Shakur.
Canes released the creation during the February 6 matchup against the Vancouver Cannucks at PNC Arena. The jerseys sold out within minutes.
"It's surreal to me; I’m not used to being in the limelight of things in my line of work," Jones said.
Proceeds from jersey sales go to Durham Success Summit, a nonprofit providing career readiness programs to young Black men.
