Hurricanes goalie Frederik Andersen named finalist for Masterton Trophy

Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Frederik Andersen has been named a finalist for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy. The award is awarded each year by the Professional Hockey Writers' Association to the player who "best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to ice hockey." Arizona Coyotes goaltender Conner Ingram and Calgary Flames defenseman Oliver Kylington join Andersen as the other two finalists.
Andersen missed 49 games because of a blood clotting issue this season. After a 4-1-0 start to the season doctors discovered the issue, which kept him out of the lineup from November 4, 2024 to March 7, 2024. After the return, Andersen went 9-1-0 in net, averaging 1.30 goals-against and a .951 save percentage with three shutouts, some of the best numbers from goaltenders in that stretch. He is the fourth different player since the team's relocation to be named a finalist for the Masterton trophy, the other three being Jordan Staal, Derek Ryan and Ron Francis. The only player in franchise history to the win the ward was Doug Jarvis during the 1986-97 season with the Hartford Whalers.
Ingram worked through obsessive compulsive disorder and lingering depression that nearly forced him into retirement. This season Ingram was 23-21-3 with a 2.91 goals-against average, .907 save percentage. His six shutouts in 50 games were tied with the NHL lead this season.
Kylington spent more than 18 months away from the game before returning to the Calgary Flames on January 25 this season to attend to his mental health. He had eight points in the 33 games after his return.
The PWHA will give a $2,500 grant to the Bill Masterton Scholarship Fund in the name of the winner.
