Grandson of Mike Krzyzewski indicted on felony charges in crash that killed 15-year-old bicyclist

A Durham man accused of hitting and killing a 15-year-old bicyclist in April was indicted Monday on felony charges.

Joseph Savarino, 26, of Durham, is the grandson of Duke basketball legend Mike Krzyzewski. Documents show Savarino was indicted for involuntary manslaughter, felony death by motor vehicle and failure to reduce speed.

Savarino, who is out of jail on bond, has a next court appearance scheduled for July.

Savarino initially faced a misdemeanor charge of driving while impaired for the incident on April 18.

The crash happened near the intersection of Cole Mill Road and Wyndham Lane in Durham.

Durham police said Savarino was driving a Ford Explorer north on Cole Mill Road when he hit Jack O'Shea, who was on an electronic bicycle. Police said O'Shea died at the scene. 

Public records show Savarino had a 0.11 blood alcohol content in his breathalyzer test conducted around 12:45 a.m. Sunday, April 19. Records show Savarino admitted to authorities that he drank earlier in the night.

A judge also issued an order to revoke Savarino’s license.

Savarino’s brother, Michael Savarino, was charged in 2022 with DWI and sentenced to 12 months of probation.

Both Joseph and Michael Savarino are sons of Krzyzewski's daughter, Debbie. Michael Savarino was a walk-on for the Duke basketball team from 2020-2022 and played for his grandfather in 13 games.
