The Oakwood Park playground in Chapel Hill closed on Monday for a major overhaul.

All the existing play structures will be removed so a completely new playground can be built. The project also includes some regrading to improve drainage, new picnic facilities, fencing and benches. Equipment will be placed farther away from the trees to protect root zones. The work should be done in late summer. Click here to take a look at the park plans.

The tennis court will remain open during the work. The project will cost about $150,000 and is being paid for through the town's Capital Improvements Program.

Oakwood Park sits at Berkley Road and Oakwood Drive.
