Quail Ridge Books in Raleigh has some fun events coming up for families.

Here's what's scheduled:

Food & Hope, a family-friendly fundraiser and diabetes awareness event starts at 10 a.m., Saturday. The event will raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's Triangle chapter. On Saturday, 10 percent of the day's sales will go to diabetes research.

The event begins in the morning with storytimes at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. with books that feature diabetes.

From 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., there will be a program called "Food For All: Everyday Cooking for All People," including those with diabetes. The program will feature local cookbook authors Sandy Gutierrez, Kathy Hester, Bridgette Lacy, Debbie Moose and Brigid Washington.
From Charlotte, Vanessa Brantley-Newton, who is an amazing speaker, will visit Quail Ridge at 2 p.m., Sunday, with her new picture book "Grandma's Purse." She is both the author and the illustrator. I had a chance to hear Brantley-Newton talk about her work last year when she celebrated the launch of the hit Jada Jones chapter book series with the author Kelly Starling Lyons of Raleigh. Brantley-Newton illustrated the series. She is really entertaining.
Here is what Quail Ridge says about Brantley-Newton's latest book: "For fans of Mary Poppins and How to Babysit a Grandma, comes a sweet story about the never-ending magical contents of Grandma's Purse. In this adorable, energetic ode to visits from grandma, beloved North Carolina picture book creator Vanessa Brantley Newton shows how an ordinary day can become extraordinary." This one is best for ages 3 and up. The book just was mentioned in this great New York Times article.
Quail Ridge's website has more information about these and other events for kids and teens coming up.
