Another beautiful spring weekend is in store for us. Here’s what’s happening on the family fun front. As always, check WRAL.com’s Out & About calendar for more ideas.

Strawberry picking

Strawberry season is definitely here. Our strawberry farm database has the details about pick-your-own farms and farm stands where you can find the fresh berries.

Free Comic Book Day

The Triangle has a lot of comic book stores, and many of them will be celebrating Free Comic Book Day on Saturday. They’ll be handing out free comic books and offering up other special events.

May the Fourth

Friday is May 4, also known as May the Fourth, which kind of sounds like May the Force Be With You. Star Wars fans will have lots of places to celebrate this annual date, including at a ball game, at the library and in other spots across the Triangle.

Raleigh

Wake County Public Library’s annual book sale is Thursday through Sunday at the N.C. State Fairgrounds. More than 220,000 books of all kinds of genres will be on sale for really low prices, which drop each day.
Marbles Kids Museum will host its annual Bike Rodeo from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, along Hargett Street in front of the museum. The outdoor activities are free and include a bike safety and obstacle course, maintenance checks, helmet fittings and more.
Gnome and Fairy Day is 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, at Prairie Ridge Ecostation in west Raleigh. The free, drop-in event includes opportunities to make your own gnome and fairy houses, using natural materials, watch a bird banding demonstration, discover pond creatures and native pollinators and explore the trails. The morning includes music, a nature story and parade. Gnome and fairy costumes welcome.
The One Tribe Fest is a “conscious life” event that features natural products, handmade items, healers, intuitive readers, yoga and more. A special area for kids includes outdoor activities, facepainting and other activities. It runs Saturday and Sunday at the NC State Fairgrounds. Tickets are $5 and free for kids 12 and under.
Out! Raleigh is 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, on Fayettevile Street in downtown Raleigh. The eighth annual event supports the LGBT Center of Raleigh, along with its more than 20 community programs. A KidsZone, which is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., includes special activities just for kids and their families with inflatables, music and more.

Durham

Saturday is Canine Field Day at Rock Quarry Park, 701 Stadium Dr. It runs 10 a.m. to noon and includes a canine disc championship, dog training and other games for your four-legged family members. It’s free.
Central Park School for Children will host its popular Strawberry Festival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday. The event is free, though some activities require a small charge. And get there hungry! They’ll have strawberry shortcake and lots of other yummy treats for sale.
Opa! Durham’s Greek Festival is 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, at St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church, 8306 NC Highway 751. They’ll have traditional music, food, performances and activities for kids. Admission is free.

Chapel Hill

The N.C. Botanical Garden will host its Spring Family Festival from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday. The all-ages festival includes hands-on nature stations, crafts and games. Tickets are $5 and free for kids ages 2 and under. It’s best to buy your tickets in advance as this is a popular event.
A Southern Season will host Carolina basketball legend Phil Ford on Saturday with special basketball workshops for parents and kids, followed by a book signing from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, for “The Kid Who Couldn’t Dunk,” a children’s book about Ford. The book signing is free. The workshops are $15. A Southern Season’s website has more information. A portion of the proceeds from Saturday’s events will go to The Phil Ford Foundation to prevent childhood obesity.

Apex

The 38th annual Apex PeakFest is 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, in downtown Apex. The largest public event in Apex, the day includes music, food and entertainment for kids. Admission is free.

Carrboro

Carrboro Day is 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday, at Carrboro Town Hall. You’ll find food vendors, poetry, crafts and interactive family games.

Cary

Fest in the West is 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, at USA Baseball in Cary. You’ll find lots of food trucks here, along with music, an arts and crafts village and a zone for kids with activities and contests. Admission is free.
Page-Walker HerbFest is 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, on the grounds of the Page-Walker Arts & History Center in downtown Cary. Tour the herb garden, get a close-up look at an historic smokehouse and take part in other activities. A special herb craft is planned for kids. And butterfly releases are scheduled for 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. It's free.

Smithfield

The 34th annual Ham & Yam Festival is 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, in Smithfield. The day includes ham, yams, pig races, inflatables, entertainment and much more. Admission is free.

Wake Forest

The 38th annual Meet in the Street is 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, in downtown Wake Forest. The free community festival offers up art, music and food, along with a young entrepreneurs fair featuring products made by kids ages 9 to 14. A children’s village on Taylor Street will have inflatables, arts and crafts and a visit with the Wake Forest Fire Department.
