It may not feel like it, but it's October, and that means the region's pumpkin patches, corn mazes and haunted houses are open for business. If a visit to one is in your weekend plans, our Halloween and fall fun database has the details.
This weekend also includes lots of other family-friendly fun, including a bunch of fall festivals. Here's what's happening on the family fun front (as always, check WRAL.com's Out & About calendar for more ideas).

Raleigh

The NC Museum of History opens Toy Boom, a new exhibit that features vintage toys, on Friday. It runs through January 2021 and is free. I'll have more about the exhibit on Go Ask Mom on Friday.
KidzStuff Consignment Sale is at Hayes Barton Baptist Church, 1800 Glenwood Ave., Raleigh. Public shopping hours are from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 3, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 4; and 8 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Oct. 5. Some items are half off on Saturday.
The 2019 Raleigh Tamale Festival is 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 5, at Dix Park. The free festival includes games and inflatables for kids, performances from local groups, Latin dance lessons and lots of tamales for sale!
Historic Oak View County Park's Farm Fest is 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 5. The free event looks back at Wake County's agricultural history and includes farm animals, exhibits, pony rides, face painting, traditional crafts and more.
Project Palooza is 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 5, at Project Enlightenment, 501 S. Boylan Ave. The free event includes Dan the Animal Man, face painting, balloon artists, lots of kid-friendly activities and more. These will be best for young grader schoolers and younger.
And downtown Raleigh will host a giant food truck rodeo from noon to 6 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 6, across 11 city blocks. More than 50 trucks from across the state will be there.

Durham

The Triangle Independent Schools Consortium, which is comprised of admissions professionals from numerous Triangle area independent schools, will host an admission fair from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 6, at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel Raleigh-Durham Airport, 4700 Emperor Blvd. There will be nearly two dozen nonprofit Triangle schools in attendance, including K-8, K-12, Christian, Jewish, Quaker, Montessori and more.
Disney's Aladdin is on stage at DPAC through Oct. 26. Tickets start at $30.

Chapel Hill

The Chapel Hill Public Library will host Birdies Fore Books, featuring mini golf. A family-friendly day is set for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, at the library. Tickets for Saturday's event are $5 for ages 5 to 12, $8 for those 13 and up and $30 for a family pack. Kids under 5 are free.

Cary

Just 4 Kids' Cary sale is in the former JC Penney at Cary Towne Center, 1105 Walnut St., Cary. Public shopping hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday and Friday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday. Some items are half off on Saturday.
Dog Days is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 5, at Bond Metro Park. There will be a dog wash, rabies vaccine and microchip clinic, a pet paddle and more.

Fuquay-Varina

The Celebrate Fuquay-Varina Festival is 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 5, in downtown Fuquay. The free event includes a kids zone, chili cook-off, live music and more.

Garner

Garner Firemen's Festival is 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 5, at Garner Fire Station 1, Benson Road and Main Street. The day includes a 2 p.m., parade, food, games, a live fire demonstration and more.

Holly Springs

Bass Lake Day, an annual nature and environmental education festival, is 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 5, at Sugg Farm, 2401 Grigsby Ave. It's free.

Selma

Railroad Days runs Friday and Saturday in downtown Selma. A model train display will be on view Friday and Saturday at the Historic Union Depot. Saturday includes a mascot race, a parade, a kids zone and more.

Wake Forest

Wake Forest Dance Festival is a day-long celebration of dance at Joyner Park on Saturday, Oct. 5. A technical rehearsal, which is open to the public, runs from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Guided walking tours, showcasing various dance styles, run at 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. And the Festival Performance is from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. It's all free and family friendly. Professional dancers from the Carolina Ballet, African American Dance Ensemble and other companies, will join local dance schools.
