What’s up this weekend for families?

It’s strawberry season! Check our database for pick-your-own farms in the area.
And Saturday is May the Fourth, which means we have a bunch of Star Wars events this weekend, including Star Wars Night at the Durham Bulls, a Star Wars-themed party at the NC Museum of Art and an Intergalactic Celebration at Crabtree Valley Mall.

And here’s more family fun …

Raleigh

The Downtown Raleigh Food Truck Rodeo is noon to 6 p.m., Sunday, May 5, and will feature food trucks spread out over 11 city blocks. My advice for families: Get there a little, so you can pick out the trucks you want to try and avoid longer lines.
Wake County Public Library’s annual book sale is noon to 9 p.m., Thursday, May 2, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday, May 3, and Saturday, May 4, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday, May 5 (while supplies last), at the NC State Fairgrounds. The sale will feature more than 200,000 books at bargain prices.
Gnome and Fairy Day is 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, May 4, at Prairie Ridge Ecostation in west Raleigh. It’s free. The day includes lots of gnome and fairy house building, arts and crafts and more. Prairie Ridge is the NC Museum of Natural Science's outdoor learning lab.
The Nursing Mothers of Raleigh will celebrate 50 years of providing breastfeeding support with an event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, May 4, at Lake Lynn Park, 7921 Ray Rd. The event will feature some activities for young kids, cake and Pelican's SnoBalls. (Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lunch.) The nonprofit has helped countless women and babies over the years with its free programs.

Durham

Parisi Speed School of Durham will host a grand opening from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, May 4. There will be free speed classes, giveaways, a food truck, DJ and more. The business offers youth sports training programs.
PAW Patrol Live!: Race to the Rescue is Saturday and Sunday at the Durham Performing Arts Center. Tickets start at about $25.

Apex

The 39th annual Apex PeakFest is 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, May 4., and includes arts, crafts, entertainment for kids, live music and more. It’s free.

Cary

The NC Courage professional women's soccer team will play Sky Blue FC at 7 p.m., Saturday, May 4, at WakeMed Soccer Park. Tickets start at $14.

Holly Springs

Carolina Children’s Museum, a group that’s working to open a children’s museum in southwestern Wake County, will host its second annual fairy garden party from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday, May 5, at the Leslie-Alford-Mims House. Tickets are $10 to $15.

Chatham County

Bark at Noah's Ark returns to Chatham County this week and will again feature amazing canine athletes jumping and diving in various DockDogs competitions. The event is a national qualifier for other DockDogs events around the country. As I wrote last year about the event, according to DockDogs' website, competitions are open to any breed, mix and size of dog. Dogs must be at least six months old. Their handlers must be at least seven years to practice or compete. It’s free to watch the competitions, which run Thursday, May 2, to Sunday, May 5, at Indian Creek K9 Aquatics in Goldston, about an hour from Raleigh.

Smithfield

The Ham and Yam Festival is 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Saturday, May 4, in downtown Smithfield. The day includes lots of food, along with arts, crafts, performances, children’s games, carnival rides and pig races.

Wake Forest

The Meet in the Street Festival is 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, May 4, in downtown Wake Forest. The arts and crafts festival features hundreds of arts and crafts booths, food trucks, live music, a magic show and a BMX stunt show. It’s free.
