The coach of North Carolina State University's dance team was charged Wednesday with embezzling tens of thousands of dollars from her team.

An arrest warrant states that Jamila Kikora Wright, 27, of 1356 Sunbow Falls Lane, Apt. 305 in Raleigh, stole $21,001.31 in "currency, goods and services" from the team between December 2007 and February.

The team is supported by fundraising and is not funded by the NCSU athletic department.

She has been released under a $2,000 secured bond and was scheduled to appear in court Thursday morning.

The warrant states that Wright was the dance team's "officer and fiduciary." A biography posted on N.C. State's sports website lists Wright as the dance team's coach in 2009-10.

The dance team's website no longer lists her in that position.

Wright was a member of the N.C. State's dance team for four years before graduating in 2004, according to her biography.

As a former member of the NC State dance team, I would like to take the opportunity to point out a couple of things about this situation. SouthernLady05 is correct - the dance team is a club team, which means that they are not part of the athletics department. They receive zero funding from the university, and the coaches are not paid. Funding for the dance team is provided from monthly dues that each dancer pays along with team fundraisers and sponsorships from the community. A lot of times these sponsorships are paid directly from the dancer or her own family. The dance team works so hard to provide their own funding each year, and it is a shame that this has happened to such an amazing and talented team.

I can't imagine she got paid very much at all, if anything being the dance coach at state. The dance team is basically like any club team at state. They aren't part of the athletics department. To my knowledge, club team coaches aren't paid. Glad she got caught.

Some people do not know when they have it made. Not surprised though that it is from a school that has so many athletes with issues in the past, coach problems such as Lowes son asnd his drug dealing, and paying Mary Easley as small fortune to work part time.....State better do a better job in screening its employees as well as monitoring them. What kind of systems were in place for this person to steal that much over that period of time???????

NCState needs a dance coach???

Whatever happened to turning on the music and moving with the rhythm?

That's how we did it in school, or we learned from one another.

No wonder that school had to raise tuition.

Stupid.

God bless.

RB

trogan45/ I hope she learns from this too. I also hope that she gets three or four years in prison.
