Man injured in Smithfield fight dies

A man who was critically injured after he tried to break up a fight Saturday outside a Smithfield business has died.

SMITHFIELD, N.C. — A man who was critically injured after he tried to break up a fight Saturday outside a Smithfield business has died.

WakeMed officials confirmed Tuesday that Gerald Luther Burton Jr. 38, who was on life support at the hospital, is deceased.

Burton was knocked to the pavement as he tried to intervene in a fight outside Hookah House, a coffeehouse and smoking establishment at 181 Venture Drive, authorities said. Burton was a bouncer at the Hookah House.

Trenton Kyle Hensley, 19, of Old Beulah Road in Kenly, was charged with felony assault inflicting serious bodily injury.
