A man who tried to break up a fight outside a Smithfield business early Saturday remains on life support at WakeMed in Raleigh, authorities said Monday.

Gerald Luther Burton Jr., 38, was knocked to the pavement as he tried to intervene in a fight outside Hookah House, a coffeehouse and smoking establishment at 181 Venture Drive, authorities said.

Trenton Kyle Hensley, 19, of Old Beulah Road in Kenly, was charged with felony assault inflicting serious bodily injury.

Authorities said the case remains under investigation.
