RALEIGH, N.C. — Thousands of votes were cast and now the winners of the <a href="https://wral5.secondstreetapp.com/2020-WRAL-Voters-Choice-Awards/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">WRAL.com Voters’ Choice Awards</a> have been announced.

In lieu of the normal in-person ceremony, this year's event took place virtually Thursday night on WRAL.com.

The “best of” ballot gives the WRAL.com audience an opportunity to vote for their favorite people, businesses and services in Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Fayetteville and other areas of North Carolina.

WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner was named best WRAL-TV personality for the second year in a row.

James Beard award-winning chef Ashley Christensen was named best local chef.

Sola Coffee was named the best coffee shop, while Two Roosters won best ice cream. Cousin's Maine Lobster won best food truck. Krispy Kreme won in the best doughnut category. Lynnwood Brewing Concern won for best brewery.

Angus Barn won three awards, including best steak, fine dining and wine selection - all categories it had won previous years.

Kandy Apples by K owner Kimberly Battle thought she was just being featured on WRAL News. She didn't know that her business had won the Best Small Business WRAL Voters' Choice Award.

Kim Battle is the creator of Candy Apples by K two years ago, she took her passion for the sweet treat to her friends and family, and she knew she had something special. So right now we have, in the case of the cotton candy, which is one of the top sellers back in April of 2019, she opened this shop in North Raleigh, hand making each apple. But don't let the name fool you. Candy apples by K does much more than just that, because we do do more than apples. We also do grapes and kiwi and all kinds of fruit. Because demand is so high, they quickly sell out each weekend. Never dreamed of this, but this is the best dream that I could ever have had. That's why we're honored to surprise her with the news. You are nominated for the Voter's Choice award for small business of the year. You have won that award. Oh, my God. Oh, my God. Are you kidding? Thank you so much. the winner is Jackie Hunt. Bro Karisma. Congratulations. Our team caught up with Jackie recently. Toe. Learn more about her story. Like many of us growing up Jackie hunts, Bergsma hated to run. I was the kind of person I used to hide in the bathroom when we used to have any track days at school. But when a cancer diagnosis in 2000 and one resulted in the amputation of her left leg, she got the urge to do something she took for granted when she was able, people tell, you know, when you just like no, I wanna be normal. I want to do what everyone else is doing Why not? Brush? MMA might have been determined to be normal, but it took many years to embrace what her new normal. Even Waas took me a long time to just even look in the mirror because I just thought I was ugly. Her baby steps towards self acceptance turned into quick strides in 2016 when she first hit the ground running, and she's been blading trails ever since. It kind of felt like a bit of a freedom. I was doing something that everyone said you couldn't Dio. It just made me feel alive. This run journey has also given her a new sense of strength. I can look in the mirror again, and I'm like how, Yeah, this person could run 100 miles and yeah, I feel proud. Just four years and many ultramarathons climbs and a world record later. Er, uh, but Russia has plenty to be proud of, but her biggest stride is still on the horizon as she plans to run a 240 mile race in Utah this fall. My only goal there is to not die. Get out in the desert. It's that infectious enthusiasm and determination that continues to add to a story where the unintentional theme has been inspiring others. I guess so many messages on social media and people just saying, because of you, I've gone out to run because of you. I've done this or that it wants my heart because it's like, Oh, this is amazing. Tennis great and ESPN analyst Chris Evert announced she has been re-diagnosed with cancer and will not be part of the network's coverage of the 2024 Australian Open. Evert, who won 18 grand slam singles titles and three grand slam doubles titles during her career, had previously announced she had been diagnosed with stage 1 ovarian cancer in January 2022. The former world No. 1 revealed that she had completed her treatment following her sixth and final chemotherapy session in May 2022.
