CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Morehead Planetarium and Science Center is in the midst of a major renovation to remake the visitor experience and increase space for exhibits and programs. And because of that work, Morehead won't be able to host its annual New Year's Eve celebration.

Morehead announced this week that Night Lights won't go on as usual. The family-friendly event, which usually runs on the afternoon of New Year's Eve, typically attracts a sold-out crowd of more than 5,000 people from across the Triangle.

“This was a difficult decision to make,” said Susan Durham, Morehead's director of operations, in a press release. “We want to offer guests an exceptional experience, but we know we could not do that with the ongoing renovation project.”
The building shut down in May for the massive renovation. Morehead's theater, however, reopened in June after work that included new seats, carpeting and paint. It now has a full schedule of public shows and events.

Coming up this month, the theater will host a Teen Science Cafe on Dec. 13, a Star Families program on Dec. 14 and a Starry Nights program on Dec. 18.

Renovations and new exhibits in the rest of the building are slated to open in fall 2020. It recently won a multi-year $2.86 million grant to help build some of those new exhibits. Morehead leaders say they plan on hosting its "biggest" New Year's event on Dec. 31, 2020.

“We are very satisfied with the progress of the renovations,” says Lizz Alfano, Morehead's exhibit manager, in the press release. “The building needed structural changes that will completely transform the experience—we can’t wait to unveil the new and improved Morehead next year!”
