Wednesday Wrap: Cooper gets a veto

Gov. Roy Cooper finally got a veto to stick despite a challenge from Republican lawmakers.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Gov. Roy Cooper finally got a veto to stick despite a challenge from Republican lawmakers.

House Democrats were able to sustain Cooper's veto of the "born alive" abortion bill that would have made it a felony for a physician not to perform life-saving measures for an infant who survived an attempted abortion. Republican backers of an override insisted the bill wasn't about abortion itself and needed to become law.

A House committee shot down the latest effort to legalize fantasy sports betting in the state.

A Senate committee approved another moratorium on new wind farms, this time for three years and in areas mapped out as being at high risk for interfering with military training.

Another Senate committee passed the annual Farm Act, keeping in place rules for hemp production while tweaking the approval process for farms looking to set up shooting ranges.

A third Senate committee approved a measure allowing alcohol sales at college athletic events, while a House committee passed a bill giving teachers more time to pass their licensing exams.

Finally, outside the legislature, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has agreed to check Durham County's voting systems for any signs of Russian hacking in the 2016 election.
