The North Carolina Zoo announced last week that they have a new addition — a baby chimpanzee!

The baby girl was born to chimp Amy on Nov. 12. Both are doing well. This is the fifth chimp birth at the zoo in the last nine years. In fact, the Asheboro destination is the most successful Association of Zoos and Aquariums zoo for breeding chimps. It also welcomed a baby boy chimp named Obi in March.

Amy, the mom, is 35 and an experienced mother. She also is mom to Gus, who was born in 2014. According to zookeepers, the troop is being respectfully curious about the new infant, including big brother Gus, a press release from the zoo says. The zoo now has 16 chimpanzees.

"Having two baby chimps born close together is such an exciting time,” Zoo Director Pat Simmons said in the release. “Our guests will be able to watch them grow and play together and understand why it’s important to save chimpanzees in the wild. We are always thrilled with births at the Zoo because it’s a win for conservation.”

It's the video of Amy and her baby, however, that really caught my eye. You can see Amy clutching her baby as she nurses and later cuddling with her little one and checking out her fingers. So sweet!
