RALEIGH, N.C. — A shooting occurred during the riots and looting in downtown Raleigh on the final weekend of May, and police on Monday charged both the suspected gunman and the victim.

Officers responded to a report of a shooting at the corner of South Blount and East Martin streets shortly after 2 a.m. May 31, and a man who had been shot was taken to WakeMed for treatment.

Police charged Richard Madison Bowden, 32, with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and discharging a firearm within the city limits in connection with the incident.

The shooting victim, Clifford Allen Gunderson, 29, was charged with felony inciting a riot, felony breaking and entering and discharging a firearm within the city limits.

A peaceful march to protest the death of George Floyd days earlier while in police custody in Minneapolis turned violent the night of May 30. Protesters and police clashed, with frozen water bottles and rocks being thrown at officers in riot gear and police deploying tear gas and firing rubber bullets to disperse the crowds.

Some protesters smashed windows and looted downtown businesses and set cars ablaze during the violence, which extended into the early hours of May 31 and occurred again the following night.
