RALEIGH, N.C. — Marbles Kids Museum opened its new Play Annex last month. The building, which sits next to Marbles' main location, now hosts birthday parties, summer camps and other programs, freeing up space in the main museum for more play.

And Marbles' staff didn't waste any time using the newly opened space inside the main museum. About two weeks ago, it opened Polar Port and Hit the Trail, two temporary exhibits where the focus is on imaginary play. I wrote about these exhibits when they opened, but here's a closer look at what you'll find at Polar Play and Hit the Trail.

Polar Port

In a room across from the first floor pirate ship and submarine and next to the Seedlings exhibit, Polar Port lets kids explore "cold weather" fun with polar-themed decorations and activities.

You'll find different materials for kids to build igloos, foam "ice" and pretend, of course, snowshoeing and ice skating opportunities.

When I visited, a mom was attempting to pull her kids from the room, where they'd spent nearly 45 minutes.

Two others were hard at work building a tower out of magnetic tiles. They were really engrossed in their work.

Hit the Trail

This new exhibit sits in Marbles' Zanzibar Room, which is off Curiosity Square on the first floor.

This large room has lots of camping and outdoors gear, including tents, a recreational vehicle, pretend campfire, fake boulders and tree stumps to hop across, giant stuffed animals and more. A big screen features hiking opportunities across the region and the state. There's also a brochure you can pick up to take with you so you can plan your own trip to the actual outdoors.

When I visited, a group of kids was having a pretty intense play session that involved lots of in and out of the tents - and the giant stuffed deer.

Jessie Rumbley, Marbles' director of communications, tells me that these new exhibits won't stick around forever - though there's no definite end date. But they could have a lasting impact on the museum. In the exhibits, Marbles staff is testing different materials or play elements that could eventually turn up in its ongoing work to remake exhibits on the museum's second floor.
Admission to Polar Port and Hit the Trail are free with admission, which is $7 per person. Marbles is in downtown Raleigh. It's been a busy many months for Marbles. It also opened an open source construction exhibit in June.
