Take the Kids: New documentary at Marbles' IMAX takes you on an 'epic mountain journey'

Not many of us will get to explore the uncharted terrain of Antarctica or ski or snowboard down untouched slopes in Alaska.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Not many of us will get to explore the uncharted terrain of Antarctica or ski or snowboard down untouched slopes in Alaska.

But in "Out of Bounds: An Epic Mountain Journey 3D," the latest documentary film at Marbles' IMAX theater, you can experience what it might be like if you traveled among Antarctica's chinstrap penguins or treaded lightly along those Alaskan slopes so you don't spark an avalanche.

"What fearless man takes on these extreme conditions?" asks a narrator at the beginning of the movie, setting up the icy dangers of Antarctica.

"A woman!" yells the movie's star, Australian Olympic gold medalist and professional snowboarder Torah Bright, as she dances atop a snowy mountain peak.

The 45-minute movie, intended for all audiences, follows Bright as she travels from Antarctica to Lake Tahoe, British Columbia and, finally, Alaska to test the slopes and share a bit about the dangers of climate change. Along the way, she meets up with U.S. freeskier Sammy Carlson, snowboarder Jeremy Jones, a K9 ski patrol team, scientists and environmentalists to learn about mountain ecosystems.

On the giant screen, you watch as seals rest on icebergs, chinstrap penguins gather together and a polar bear roam across an icy expanse. You learn about the dangers of avalanches and watch as a team takes steps to keep the mountains safe. And you see Bright, Carlson and Jones take on some spectacular slopes that are definitely not for the novice winter sports fan.

For kids, the lessons about climate change and the environment might get lost amid the snowboarding and skiing stunts. And there's some obvious product placement as the stars get in and out of Honda vehicles. Honda sponsored the movie. But, in 45 minutes, there's plenty of action to keep the kids entertained — and plenty of beautiful scenery to keep us adults engaged too.

"Out of Bounds" is scheduled daily through at least Jan. 26. Tickets are $5 for kids under 12 and $7 for adults.
