I wrote about the previous location for the aptly named Raleigh French Bakery in 2015.
Back then, I'd discovered a place called Kader's French Bakery, tucked off Western Boulevard, thanks to an old friend of my daughter's. There, we found authentic French pastries, just like the ones I ate back when I was a very young child living in France, at really affordable prices.

Well, the shopped eventually moved. It now takes up a prominent position along Hillsborough Street between downtown Raleigh and N.C. State University and is, to my waistline's chagrin, much closer to my house.

It's just as amazing. In fact, my Mother's Day wish this year is a trip to the shop for some delicious pastries and a baguette (or two) to take home for dinner.

Owner Kader Boughrara returned to his hometown in Algeria, which is the second largest French-speaking country in the world, to perfect his French baking. Today, he offers all sorts of products - from croissants and Danishes to breads, tarts and beautiful Genoise cakes, multi-layered sponge cakes. Kader can make 50 different kinds of these cakes and typically has about 20 in rotation on any given day.

Just take a look at his creations ...

Cookies and a Napoelon, which combines flaky pastry and custard.

Buttery, puffy chocolate croissant (or pain au chocolat as I grew up calling them).

This seriously is the real deal. The shop isn't fancy, but it has a lot of seating and also serves up drinks, including espresso-based beverages. My mother took a friend there, where they spent hours chatting, and she was thrilled to find her favorite cafe au lait, or coffee with milk, actually on the menu.

Prices are really affordable. Most things are less than $3. A croissant, for instance, will set you back about $1.60. A Danish is around $2. It's definitely worth a visit and is a great stop for families.
