We'll start with confessions first: We just had the doughnuts. We'll be back for the biscuits very soon.

But the gooey, sweet doughnuts called our names when my family visited Rise Biscuits & Donuts near The Streets at Southpoint in Durham a couple of Sundays ago.
Rise opened late last year and long lines have formed out the door of the store ever since. Well ... that's not exactly true. We got there at about 8 a.m. and, while there was a line inside, it was manageable, well run and didn't take long for us to get our box of deliciousness.

Soon after we got there, it definitely started getting busy. I think we'll probably always make it a point to get here early. Lucky for us, I suppose, our kids are early risers.

We chose a few different flavors - cookies and cream, chocolate glazed, chocolate pudding filled and some sort of tropical flavored doughnut with a tart glaze and sweet, creamy goodness inside. (I can't remember the name now).

Donuts at Rise

These are handmade doughnuts, not machine made like your usual doughnut shop. And there are all sorts of interesting combinations (admittedly, my family could have been a bit more adventurous in our choices). For instance, you might see the chocolate cake doughnut with poblano chiles sorghum icing and bacon on the menu or the pineapple glazed with basil cream and pistachios.

The shop is open daily from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the doughnut selection changes each day. You can keep up with the flavors on the shop's website and Facebook and Twitter pages. Vegan doughnuts are available on Tuesdays. Trace of gluten doughnuts are sold on Wednesdays.

The biscuits come with classic fillings such as eggs or sausage or jam. There are daily biscuit specials too.

Play area at Rise

This is mostly a take-out business, but there are some tables outside. Inside, you'll find a small children's play area and books to keep the little ones entertained while you wait.

Find Rise at 8200 Renaissance Parkway in the Renaissance Village shopping center. There's a Target, Moonberries frozen yogurt shop and Kid-to-Kid store all nearby.

This is the second post in an occasional summer seasons featuring summer treats. Check the box above for the first.
