RALEIGH, N.C. — Goley Boggs, who is in charge of controlling Gate 5 at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds, was nearly crushed by a pine tree Thursday night when it fell on his trailer.

"Everything was quiet, and then, all of a sudden, there was a lot of crashing, and a big limb came through the roof of the trailer," he said.

Boggs, who lives in the trailer during the run of the State Fair, was asleep when the tree fell.

"It knocked me back, and it hit me in my chest and side," he said.

Boggs tried to push the limb off, but by the time he made it to the edge of the trailer, people were there to help pull him out.

"I didn't quite have my bearings together, and next thing I know, EMS is here," he said.

Boggs was transferred to WakeMed with minor injuries. He ended up spending the night at home.

Without missing a beat, Boggs was back on the job Friday morning, in time for the State Fair ribbon-cutting ceremony.

"I don't like missing work, and, you know, I love being out here and doing what I got to do here at the gate," Boggs said. "It's fun, and I enjoy it."

He said he is thankful things didn't turn out any worse.

"I've never been in a plane crash, but something like that right there was about as close of an experience I could ever have to a plane crash," he said. "All that metal bending and crashing and that thing was rolling around and moving. It was a very strange experience."

A tent nearby was also destroyed by the falling limb.

The North Carolina State Fair was originally supposed to open Thursday, but the opening was delayed until 10 a.m. Friday because of Tropical Storm Michael.
