Sonshine Wear offers T-shirts with subtle Christian messages

"We both felt like there was a niche in the market that wasn't being met," Miller tells me.

Sonshine Wear doesn't offer T-shirts emblazoned with a Bible verse in large font or big pictures. Instead, subtle and small is the focus.

A T-shirt for women, for instance, has a small coffee cup decorated with a cross and the words "start your day the right way." For men, there's a shirt featuring a tree and its roots, saying only "deeply rooted." For kids, there's a shirt with a giraffe that says "always remember to look up."

Miller comes up with the ideas and a friend, another local mom, completes the design.

"We wanted to do something with a personal impact," said Miller, whose family attends Trinity Baptist Church in Raleigh. "Simple designs that spread the message without being too complex."

The goal of the shirts is to help start conversation with others, but to also serve as a daily reminder to the person wearing it.

"It's a reminder that you are a projection of your faith as well," Miller tells me.

The Millers are selling the shirts online and recently signed a lease with The Cotton Company in Wake Forest where they will open a Sonshine Wear storefront on Oct. 13.

So far, early reviews have been great, Miller tells me.

"It's given me a new energized feeling," she said. "I'm excited about the concept and the impact it could make."
