CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Orange County deputies said they are investigating a string of burglaries where a man wearing a construction vest knocked on the door and when no one answered broke into the home.

The break-ins happened between July 8 through July 19.

Deputies said a man wearing a yellow traffic safety vest got out of a grayish-blue Nissan Maxima and knocked on the door. When no one answered, a second man came up to the door, according to deputies.

Security footage from a home showed the two men carrying items stolen from inside the house. Deputies said the men were able to get inside the house by kicking in the back door.

Deputies said they believed the men assessed other houses as possible targets. If someone answered the door when the man in the vest knocked, the man likely gave a work-related courtesy call for why he was in the area, according to deputies.

Chapel Hill police said they are also investigating a similar break-in that happened around 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Police said a man wearing a safety vest was seen on camera knocking on doors, and then entering a home when no one answered.

Anyone who has security footage of the men or recognizes the men from an encounter at the door is asked to call Investigator Nazworth at 919-245-2960 and Investigator Stewart at 919-245-2925.
