RALEIGH, N.C. — Sassafras All Children's Playground is back open for the business of play after several weeks of work to replace the rubber playground surface.

The playground shut down April 29, but wasn't expected to reopen until early June.

As I've written before, the playground opened in November 2016 with great fanfare. For years, a local mom and others had worked to rebuild the playground at the north Raleigh park to ensure the play pieces offered something for children of all abilities, including those with mobility issues.

But, two years later, in November 2018, the rubber playground surface layers below the play pieces began to separate and bubble, resulting in trip hazards and the closure of portions of the playground, according to a city news release. The city completed some temporary work to fix the problem before shutting the playground down again in April for a more permanent solution.

Now the 3.5-acre playground is ready for play again. It's at Laurel Hills Park, 3808 Edwards Mill Rd.
