RALEIGH, N.C. — Last week, Durham chef Ricky Moore of Saltbox Seafood was named Best Chef in the Southeast at the James Beard Foundation Awards.
Before he got any sleep, Moore talked with WRAL News about winning the honor. He was at the airport, on his way home from Chicago, where the awards gala was held.
"It was surreal," he said of the honor. "As a chef, as a restaurant person, as a chef-owner, as a chef-entrepreneur, these are the times. These are the peaks."
Moore, who was a semi-finalist for the honor in 2020, opened Saltbox Seafood on North Mangum Street in 2012 and closed that location in 2021. A second location followed at 2637 Durham-Chapel Hill Blvd. in 2017.
On this week's WRAL Out and About Podcast, we share the full interview Durham reporter Monica Casey did with Moore just hours after he won the award.
