Posted — UpdatedGlenn Locklear III, 24, of Maxton is charged with first-degree murder, concealment of death by dismembering human remains and altering and destroying evidence.
Robeson County Sheriff Burnis Wilkins said Locklear buried parts of his girlfriend's body in plastic bags in a shallow grave near his home.
It took investigators two weeks to find her body after she went missing.
By using identifying markings and tattoos, sheriff's office investigators and family members said they identified the remains as those belonging to Wendy Jones, 20, also from Maxton. Authorities are still waiting on the official confirmation from the North Carolina Medical Examiner's Office.
“What we witnessed at this crime scene is something I would wish on no one. Having to tell the family they could not see their own daughter is really hard” Wilkins said. “No woman should tolerate a man physically abusing them.”
Wilkins said this is the third domestic violence-related murder to take place in Robeson County in the past 10 months.
"They've all been brutal deaths," Wilkins said. "Two of them were burned. And now this one has been dismembered."
Family and friend are trying to make sense of this tragic loss.
Tony Hunt, Locklear's cousin said "you could have never fooled me in a million years" that Locklear would be accused of murder.
Jones' mother and father are devastated.
"She was a good mother," Linda Jones, Wendy's mother said. "She always come to the house and hang out with me and her daddy. We always bond together. We always cook out and have fun and everything."
Locklear is being held without bond in the Robeson County Detention Center. Family members tell us they're going to have a balloon release for Wendy Jones this weekend.
