What's bean pie, you might ask?

Rhonda K. Muhammad, an educator with a doctorate in education leadership, a culinary arts teacher and the owner of Rhonda’s Pie Creations, has been making this traditional pie for more than 40 years. She'll be talking about culinary traditions from African to America from 3:45 p.m. to 4:15 p.m., Saturday, during the African American Cultural Celebration at the N.C. Museum of History in downtown Raleigh. The event, which kicks off Black History Month, is free.

During Muhammad's talk, she'll also be offering samples of her famous pie. Here's what she says about the sought-after dish:

"The bean pie is a familiar dessert in many urban cities like New York, Baltimore, Washington, DC, Philadelphia, Detroit and Newark. It has its early beginnings as a creative expression for dessert made from the navy bean. During the years following the Depression, when food was scarce and people had to do a lot with a little, the navy bean’s use was extended beyond that of just bean soup. As a staple in African American families, it began to take on a variety of uses as a plant-based protein source that was economical and yielding. Included is the dessert bean pie, which is often served with whip cream or ice cream."

Muhammad tells me she gets requests for the pie at gatherings, family reunions, banquets and other special occasions. As part of Go Ask Mom's weekly featured recipe series, Muhammad shares her sought-after bean pie recipe with us!
