RALEIGH, N.C. — As the summer swim season begins, the city of Raleigh is still on the hunt for more than a few good lifeguards.

And, actually, to get the job, you don't need to have your lifeguard certification right this moment. (But you do have to be a solid swimmer.)

Teens as young as 15 can sign up for the Seasonal Aquatic Vocational Education Program, a free program to those who pass a pre-screen swim test tryout.

To qualify for the program, applicants must meet these prerequisites, according to the website:

  • 15 years of age or older
  • Pass City of Raleigh controlled substance and background tests
  • Swim 300 continuously with rhythmic breathing. Freestyle and breaststroke, not stopping.
  • Tread water using only legs for two minutes
  • Swim 20 yards, retrieve a 10 lb. object from the bottom of the pool, return object to starting position and exit the water in 1 min 40 seconds
  • Work 155 hours for City of Raleigh Aquatics Program upon completion of the class

Certified lifeguards can earn from $9.25 per hour to $10.25 per hour depending on their certifications. Pools operate from about 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. The city, according to its website, is hiring for all hours, but really needs lifeguards to supervise morning and daytime swimming.

Much more information is on the city of Raleigh's website.
