RALEIGH, N.C. — For parents of teens who are eager for a summer job, here's an option - as long as they are 15.

The city of Raleigh needs lifeguards for year-round and summer work. And they will offer training for free as long as prospective lifeguards are 15, meet other eligibility requirements and commit to 155 hours of paid work at city pools.

Lifeguards get CPR/AED and first aid training and are involved in the day-to-day operations at the pool they are assigned to.

And they typically earn between $9.25 and $10.25 per hour, depending on their certifications, according to the city's website. Hours of operation at most pools run from about 5 a.m. to 8 p.m.

To qualify for the free training, in addition to being at least 15, applicants also must pass controlled substance and background tests, swim 300 meters continuously with rhythmic breathing, and tread water using only their legs for two minutes.

They'll also have to be able to do this: Swim 20 yards, retrieve a 10 pound object from the bottom of the pool, return the object to the starting position and exit the water in 1 minute, 40 seconds.

Much more information is on the city's website.
