RALEIGH, N.C. — Raleigh Little Theatre will put a classic children's series on the stage starting this week with its production of "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe."

Based on the book by C.S. Lewis, the show tells the story of Aslan, the great lion, his struggle with the White Witch and the adventures of four children who wander into an old wardrobe. This story of love, faith, courage, and giving, with its triumph of good over evil, is a true celebration of life, as the press release - and anybody who has read the book - would tell you.

The show opens Friday, Oct. 19, and runs through Oct. 28 at the theater at 301 Pogue St. near Cameron Village. Tickets are $18 for adults and $12 for kids ages 12 and under. RLT's website has more information.

The run includes a couple of special shows:

On Saturday, Oct. 20, RLT will host a post-show discussion after the 1 p.m. performance with Rev. Sharon Taylor about the impact of C.S. Lewis to people of faith. Taylor serves as senior pastor at nearby Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.

RLT also will continue its work to make the theater accessible to all with its second sensory-friendly performance at 1 p.m., Nov. 3. Sensory-friendly performances are designed for individuals with autism spectrum disorders, sensory sensitivities or other disabilities.

This will be the first of three sensory-friendly shows that are part of Raleigh Little Theatre's youth series this season. A sensory-friendly version of June B. Jones, The Musical, is 1 p.m., March 2. Bob Marley's Three Little Birds is set for 1 p.m., March 30.

Modifications during the shows will include:

  • Fewer loud or jarring sounds
  • Less flashing or strobe lights among other adjustments to the performance lighting.
  • Extra staff and volunteer support on hand in case anybody needs help.
  • Guidance and sensory supports, including fidgets, earplugs and noise canceling ear muffs, available in the lobby before the show.
  • Fewer tickets sold and all seats will be general admission so theatergoers can pick a seat where they feel comfortable and will have room to move around.
  • A designated quiet space in the lobby during the hour-long performance for audience members who need a break. Theatergoers are welcome to bring their own manipulatives, seat cushions, comfort objects and support items to the show.
Raleigh Little Theatre has more details about the accommodations on its website.
