JAMESTOWN, N.C. — You can't start summer break without planning trips to the pool. My daughters are all over the topic and it got me thinking about pools we've enjoyed. High Point City Lake Park was one of the first places to come to mind.

We've only been once and that was four years ago. It was such a good time. There were many people swimming but not enough to complain about. Crowded pools are honestly what I expect during summer months -- especially depending on the day and time of your visit.

What I love about this park is its plethora of things to do. There are stand-up paddleboards, canoes, pedal boats, kayaks and fishing boats for rent. Proper licenses and permits allow you to bank and boat fish.

Pontoon boat tours are also available, and it's the other activity we enjoyed while there. I remember the shade of the boat and the periodic breezes feeling like heaven. It was a very hot day! Additionally, my daughters were fascinated by the wildlife our guide pointed out during the tour. Nature kept us entertained.

Kids can enjoy riding the carousel, playing on the playground and taking the train ride as well.

There's a miniature golf course on the premises, but I don't remember it.

When it comes to food, bring your own or stop by the concession stand. We grabbed hot dogs and drinks. There were picnic tables spaced out nearby and that's where we sat to have lunch.

Picnic shelters are available to rent for larger groups. And for you grill masters, the website mentions grills.

Recent research informed me of construction projects expected to be completed by the official start of summer 2022. You can watch progress of the project at this link.

Visitors can look forward to widened sidewalks, more handicapped parking and an improved pool entryway. The pool area is receiving a facelift with the addition of a new slide, play features and a lazy river.

One thing I remember really appreciating about the pool is that it goes from extremely shallow (1 foot deep I think) to much deeper depths. With my daughters so young at the time, it was nice having those more shallow waters available. Hopefully, this doesn't change. And I haven't mentioned how huge the pool is. When you visit, you'll see for yourself!

Outdated mechanical systems are being replaced. Locker rooms and the concessions area are also being remodeled. There are other positive changes coming to the premises that you can read about on the website.

I'm looking forward to seeing it all. How about you?

In the meantime, watch the vlog for a look at our time there:
