It's Peach Day this Thursday at the State Farmers Market.

You'll find lots of peaches, along with some free samples and recipes at the market, which sits near the Lake Wheeler Road exit off the Beltline.

The peach season in North Carolina runs from late May to early September or so. Last year, growers yielded 5,600 tons of peaches and grew more than 70 different varieties including Candor, Gala, Ruby Prince, June Crest and Dixie Red, according to the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Freestone peaches (the kind where the stone easily comes out of the fruit) also should be available now.

I bought some peaches about a week ago and asked the grower a bit about them. She told me that they typically come out with a new variety every two weeks. Just another reason to keep going back.

And if you're looking for some peach recipes, check the agriculture department's recommendations.

And mark your calendars for Watermelon Day on Aug. 5.
