Crowder District Park in Apex will celebrate the opening of its new playground with a ceremony at 3 p.m., Friday.

The original playground closed in September to make way for the new play pieces. The new playground will fit the same footprint as the original play pieces, but will offer more features by rising higher off the ground, including a 10-foot central tower with bigger slides, more climbing apparatus and pieces that kids can spin around in.

Friday's event includes a ribbon cutting ceremony, refreshments and play. Bring a non-perishable food item to be entered into a raffle to win a free nature program at the park. Donations will support the park's fourth annual food drive to benefit the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina.

The park, part of Wake County's park system, is at 4709 Ten Ten Rd., Apex.
