Graham police found a 23-year-old woman dead inside of a car that was submerged in a pond that had significant flooding from Tropical Depression Chantal.
Police found Hajar Hassib in the pond along South Jim Minor Road just south of Turner Road. Authorities pronounced the 23-year-old dead at the scene.

“Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with Ms. Hassib's family and friends during this unimaginable time,” said Graham Police Chief Kristi Cole. “We are grateful for the quick and professional assistance provided by the Alamance County Sheriff's Office and Alamance County Rescue.”
On Monday, Graham police received a report that Hassib was missing from her family members. Police said she was last seen Sunday when she was returning to her home in Graham.
The police used cellphone technology traced Hassib’s last known location to the area of South Jim Minor Road and Graham Smith Drive, an area that had significant flooding from Chantal.
Alamance County Rescue used specialized equipment, including dive teams, to help in the search effort.
The Alamance County Sheriff’s Office is leading the ongoing death investigation.
There have been at least five other deaths from the storm in central North Carolina. It includes:
- A man died in Alamance County after his car was swept away by floodwaters
- In Chatham County, an 83-year-old Pittsboro woman was killed when her car was swept off a rural road by floodwaters Sunday night.
- On Monday, crews found the body of a Person County woman who went missing while on her way to work in Orange County on Sunday night, according to a social media post by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.
- The body of a missing boater was also found at Jordan Lake in Chatham County. Teams are still searching for another missing boater on the lake.
Parts of Alamance County got more than 7 inches of rain from Tropical Depression Chantal. The Haw River crested at 32.5 feet on Monday morning.
