71-year-old man found dead after being swept away in floodwaters in Alamance County

Authorities have identified a 71-year-old man who was found dead in Alamance County after his vehicle was swept away by floodwaters on Sunday night.

According to the Alamance County Sheriff's Office, James Parcell, 71, of Haw River, is one of six people who died in the storms caused by Tropical Depression Chantal.

Deputies said Parcell's friend called 911 on Sunday night after he was driving separately and lost sight of his vehicle near the intersection of Jones Drive and Calloway Drive. The vehicle was found covered in running water approximately 50 to 100 yards from the road.

There have now been six confirmed deaths from the storm in central North Carolina.

- In Alamance County, authorities found a 23-year-old woman dead inside of a car that was submerged in a pond that had significant flooding.

- In Chatham County, an 83-year-old Pittsboro woman was killed when her car was swept off a rural road by floodwaters Sunday night.

- On Monday, crews found the body of a Person County woman who went missing while on her way to work in Orange County on Sunday night, according to a social media post by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.

- The bodies of two missing boaters were found at Jordan Lake in Chatham County.

Parts of Alamance County got more than 7 inches of rain from Tropical Depression Chantal. The Haw River crested at 32.5 feet on Monday morning.
