Cary man held without bond after girlfriend found dead at business she managed

Friends of Travis Huff and Rebecca Carter were shocked to hear that she was dead and he was a murder suspect.

Kevin Thomas worked with Huff in the hotel business and said the couple had been together for about two years.

"I didn't think this is something that Travis was even possible of doing or have the capability to do," he said Thursday, a day after his friend was charged with murder.

Carter, 41, was found dead Wednesday inside an apartment at CubeSmart Storage located at 950 Trinity Road. Police said she was the manager of the storage facility and lived on the premises.

Thomas said the couple had been living together.

"My last text with him was January 16 ... And I asked him, 'how's everything with you and your girl?' And he said, 'we are okay.' And I said, 'Okay, well, I'm here if you need me,'" Thomas told WRAL News.

Cary police arrested Huff at the scene of the crime after, they said, he made incriminating statements to the responding officers. They said they suspect Carter was the victim of domestic violence.

Both Carter's death and the arrest came as a surprise, Thomas said.

"We all kind of keep in touch, and not one person can pinpoint, you know, seeing when something went wrong, or seeing a switch in his behavior, or anything," he said.

Huff was being held without bail at the Wake County jail.
