A man is dead after a shooting on Thursday that closed U.S. Highway 64 West in Wake County near the intersection of Lizard Lick Road, according to the Wake County Sheriff's Office.
When deputies arrived at the scene, they found 55-year-old Derick Godwin with a gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Deputies confirmed Sunday that he died from his injuries.

Deputies said they've identified the shooter, but they did not provide any details about any charges or possible arrests. They added that there is no known threat to the community.
The investigation closed US 64 between Lizard Lick and Rolesville roads for several hours. It has since reopened.
Broadcastify radio traffic indicates that the shooter's car could be a grey Ford Taurus, but did not specify the year. We are working to confirm this description.
In a post with a GoFundMe link attached, Godwin’s family said he would be taken off life support and his organs would be donated.
“Any funds raised will go towards his retired parents who are facing the financial obligations associated with his cremation, any memorial services, and the 2 dogs he was forced to leave behind,” the post read in part.
The Wake County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the shooting has been identified, but so far, no arrests have been made.
It is one of two deadly road rage incidents that have happened in the county in just three days.
On Saturday, a fight broke out on Knightdale Boulevard between two men, one of whom appeared to have a gun in his hand.

WRAL News asked the department in both cases why no arrests have been made and if either shooting was in self-defense.
A statement by the sheriff’s office read in part, “The investigation into both shootings remains ongoing, and we are committed to conducting thorough and accurate investigations over speed.”
Officials said both cases remain active and investigators are examining all possible motives, including road rage.
