RALEIGH, N.C. — Wake Electric is accepting applications for two $1,000 college scholarships and all-expenses paid trips to Washington, D.C., for the 2011 Rural Electric Youth Tour.

Applicants must be high school juniors in Wake, Durham, Johnston, Vance, Granville, Nash or Franklin counties. Students do not have to live in households served by Wake Electric in order to win.

The deadline to apply is March 11. Applications can be downloaded through the company's website.

Applicants will be notified about their entries in early April.

The students who are selected will each receive $1,000 scholarships in the following year upon proof of enrollment in a college or university.

The students will also be given spots on the North Carolina Rural Electric Youth Tour, sponsored by Wake Electric. The tour brings together 1,500 high school students from across the country to learn about electric cooperatives, American history and the U.S. government.

Students also have the chance to visit historical sites, including the Lincoln Memorial and the Vietnam Memorial, and tour the White House.

The tour is planned June 11-17.
