CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The chief operating officer of UNC Hospitals announced Thursday that he plans to retire at the end of June.

Todd Peterson has served as executive vice president and COO of the hospital system since 1989. His retirement will be effective June 30.

“The incredible growth of UNC Hospitals over the past 20 years, to almost 800 beds, would not have been possible without Todd’s leadership,” Gary Park, president of UNC Hospitals, said in a statement Thursday.

“Todd’s steady hand ensured that we could remain true to serving the people of North Carolina, even as we built and opened four new hospitals and hundreds of new beds during his tenure.”

Before he came to UNC, Peterson worked at hospital systems in California and Philadelphia.
